In most sports photography the images center around the action – the football player stretching to catch a pass in the end zone or a baseball player sliding into home. Instead of focusing on the actions, The Contenders focuses on the personal reactions. Inspired by Baroque artists like Caravaggio, Rubens and Rembrandt this series of portraits in strain isn’t about competition, winners or losers. The Contenders is about the humanity that rises to the surface during the personal struggle between two people as they match abilities, skills and determination.
